The Worse Kind of (Car) Neglect

0-diagram-11

As tedious as it seems, you absolutely need to change your car’s oil. It matters. The oil keeps your car’s motor running—literally. Here’s why:

Lubricates
Oil lubricates by keeping metal riding on a thin film. The oil prevents metal parts from touching and thus seizing.

Cools
Oil pulls heat away from the moving parts of the engine. That’s the logic behind most cars having an oil cooler. It also reduces friction, which keeps parts cooler.

Cleans
Engine oil is responsible for removing debris from the engine crank case and oil galleys. Oil typically consists of detergent packs that keep those moving parts clean. This is the key area that separates the cheap car oil from the good stuff.

Over time, the oil loses its ability to carry out this essential trifecta of duties. As it ages, it loses its mojo—hence the need for regular oil changes. Make sure that your car gets the proper engine oil. Consult your owner’s manual for the best oil and the proper replacement interval.

A final tip: Using a good quality oil filter will help keep your oil clean. Try establishing this as a best practice—change the filter when you change the oil. We recommend using manufacturer oil filters in your cars. If you choose an aftermarket filter, be sure it is the right size at least. Changing the engine oil and filters is one of the most important things you can do for your car. Believe me, we see engines all the time that have to be replaced due to lack of proper oil changes. This is definitely one of the cheapest, most important services your car needs. Skip it at your own—and your car’s – peril.
